about c2c

6 days • 100 riders • 1500km • £400,000

We will cycle from London on Thursday 11 March to the South Coast, before crossing the Channel and overnighting in Calais. The aim is to finally arrive in Cannes at 1500hrs on Tuesday 16 March for the start of MIPIM 2010. The relay, made up of three pelotons, will each ride a minimum of 120 kms a day over two sessions, although those wishing to ride for longer can do so. With our rolling road closure it is possible to maintain an average speed of around 15-17mph, however it must be stressed that this is not a race, with each peloton riding at the speed of the slowest rider with more experienced riders taking the wind and generally assisting the peloton. Support is provided by our motorbike escort, mechanics, C2C coaches and other vehicles.

The ride is fantastic fun; an adventure with great camaraderie and is designed for fit commuters as well as hardened roadies. The logistics of moving 70 riders and £140,000 of bikes over the 6 days will require 24 support staff including 8 motorbike outriders, 2 mechanics, 2 lead cars and support vehicles, and requires in excess of a years preparation.

The open, friendly and interactive atmosphere is core to the ethos of C2C. Like-minded passionate cyclists and property professionals from all over the UK form a community within which they can sociably interact, train and ride hard.

C2C Background

The ride was the brainchild of Peter Murray who had undertaken a series of solo charity rides in the past and believed that a cycling event at the time of the MIPIM Property Fair could tap in to the generosity of the property industry and raise significant amounts for good causes. At the same time it would help to promote cycling and sustainable forms of transport.

The first ride in 2006 had just 17 riders supported by a double decker bus with bunks and a camper van as broom wagon. The weather was cold and at times we faced blizzard conditions. But all arrived safely having enjoyed the experience of a lifetime. We raised £110,000.

In 2007 we had 52 riders including the majority of those from the previous year. This time there was a rolling road closure, we stayed in hotels and the weather was rather milder yet the experience was just as exhilarating. We raised £270,000. In 2008 117 took part and completed the distance. Once again we raised funds for our core charities, raising over £210,000. Then in 2009, despite the economic gloom, 63 riders made their way to Cannes generating £130,000 for charitable causes.

Our objective is to provide riders with a significant goal that keeps them focused, helps them reach new levels of performance, and spurs them to mentally and physically push through preconceived boundaries. It is a lifetime experience – the pro style backup and support means this is the closest an amateur rider will get to feeling and riding like a professional.

Since 2006 we have assisted our five core charities: LandAid, Tom's Trust, Sarah Matheson Trust, Article 25 and The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. We also make occasional one off grants to additional charities.
