Haiti Earthquake - Cycle to Cannes fundraisers to support reconstruction
Article 25 are one of the core charities supported by Cycle to Cannes and will be offering their support in the rebuilding of Haiti once the reconstruction process begins.
The 7.0-magnitude quake, Haiti's worst in two centuries, struck at 16:53 local time on Tuesday, January 12th, just 15km (10 miles) south-west of the capital Port-au-Prince. Tens of thousands are feared dead with up to three million affected and tens of thousands of buildings destroyed.
After the immediate chaos and confusion of this natural disaster, the importance of built environment expertise in the reconstruction effort will play a vital role in the coming months.
With much of the death caused by the collapse of buildings, the recovery process is an opportunity to build back better: built environment skills should play a crucial role in safe guarding lives by designing seismically resistant buildings that reduce the risk of death in future disasters. Carefully designed and executed reconstruction of safer structures will offer some security to those that have lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods in the latest tragedy to befall Haiti.
Article 25 saw the value of applying intelligent building expertise firsthand in their work delivering seismically resistant housing following the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan.
Article 25 is monitoring the international response effort, examining the best way to coordinate with key agencies and channel built environment skills into the reconstruction phase to come.
Supporting Cycle to Cannes is one way of helping build a safer and better prepared Haiti for the future. Over the last 4 years Cycle to Cannes have donated over £122,000 to Article 25.
Aedas Cycle to Cannes Launches 2010 Programme
Aedas Architects Ltd has teamed with Cycle to Cannes (C2C) to launch The Aedas Cycle to Cannes programme for 2010. The 6-day, 1500 km cycling endurance event brings together the property industry with the aim to increase contributions and awareness to five core charities: LandAid, Tom's Trust, Sarah Matheson Trust, Article 25 and The Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
As a leader in sustainable architectural design initiatives, Aedas has teamed with C2C to leverage a series of highly sustainable events that will promote cycling and sustainable forms of transport. C2C which promotes London businesses at the 2010 MIPIM property conference, will be the first event, with subsequent rides supporting the 2010 British Council of Offices and the 2012 Olympics in London. The practice hopes to help C2C grow at an international level and to develop the rides for the property industry.
The ride, which started in 2006 with just 17 riders, has grown to more than 60 riders who have raised nearly £750,000 for charities. Funded by the generosity of the property industry, The Aedas Cycle to Cannes event hopes to increase donations and have set a goal of £900,000 by the end of 2010. Aedas’ Associate Director John Nordon notes “we are delighted to be a part of such a worthwhile cause and hope to exceed all expectations.”
C2C Nick Hanmer notes “it is a lifetime experience – the pro style backup and support means this is the closest an amateur rider will get to feeling and riding like a professional.” After completing the ride, cyclists – all professionals in development, architecture or planning - change their lycra for their business suits and take part in the MIPIM Property Fair.
